Background
Global Peace Foundation is a nonprofit organization that coordinates international initiatives and seasonal fundraising campaigns. To support these global efforts, the organization requires a highly reliable and performant website capable of handling significant traffic volumes from around the world.
Prior to working with Pronto, the foundation’s communications and design teams managed multiple plugin licenses independently and utilized a self-hosted environment. Seeking a more streamlined approach, they migrated their website to Pronto to consolidate their hosting infrastructure, resolve ongoing plugin conflicts, and establish a structured support process for continuous website updates and maintenance.
The Challenge: Overcoming Server Instability and Workflow Bottlenecks
As a nonprofit managing global initiatives and seasonal fundraising campaigns, Global Peace Foundation needed a stable platform to handle significant visitor influxes. However, their existing setup presented several critical bottlenecks:
Traffic Spikes and Server CrashesÂ
The organization experienced severe instability and infinite loading loops on desktop during high traffic periods. While average monthly traffic was typically around 10,000 users, volume routinely spiked to over 70,000 during major events.
Aggressive Cyber AttacksÂ
Performance crashes were exacerbated by massive spikes in bot traffic originating from China , driving unique IP visits to 300,000. These AI crawlers bypassed security rules to target deep archive pagination URLs, exhausting server PHP resources and causing recurring 504 timeout errors.
Plugin Conflicts
Independent plugin management resulted in severe software conflicts. Essential speed optimization tools, such as WP Rocket, had to be deactivated after clashing with other plugins, drastically reducing site speed.
Design Workflow Bottlenecks
The internal design team struggled with an extremely slow staging environment. A strict two-thread PHP limit caused their Divi Visual Builder to freeze and return error messages, preventing them from efficiently testing and saving layout changes for new campaigns.
The Solution: Migrating to a Secure, High-Performance WordPress Environment
Securing the Server
To address the severe instability, the website was migrated to Pronto’s managed infrastructure. Engineers implemented a Cloudflare Web Application Firewall (WAF) challenge to block abusive bot traffic from China while ensuring legitimate human visitors could still access the site.
Cloudflare’s WAF protects server resources by intercepting and challenging suspicious AI crawlers before they reach the destination
To further reduce server strain, access to deep archive pagination beyond page 50 was restricted, preventing AI crawlers from triggering resource-heavy database searches. Additionally, over 2,000 redirect rules were migrated directly to the server side, eliminating the need for WordPress to consume PHP resources for every redirect.
Finally, the client’s staging environment was upgraded to a Premium Staging plan. This upgraded setup mirrored live-site resources and resolved the PHP thread bottleneck, allowing the internal design team to use the Divi Visual Builder smoothly.
Optimizing Media Assets
During the site speed optimization process, images were manually converted to lightweight WEBP formats, and SVG files were utilized for icons to improve load times. To balance performance with brand standards, specific high-quality assets like the main hero image and the GPF logo were carefully re-uploaded to ensure crisp rendering.
Perfecting Cross-Device Layouts
The Pronto team provided multiple layout mockups to revamp the “Where We Work” page, improving regional navigation and visual hierarchy. Rendering issues on tablet viewports, specifically concerning the spacing and padding of social media icons and the donation button, were corrected.

Custom CSS and JavaScript were deployed to adjust the website’s mega menu responsiveness on tablets, ensuring dropdowns toggled correctly without misdirecting users.
Streamlining User Navigation
The Media Room’s filtering system was overhauled to allow users to logically combine multiple categories, including Country and Initiatives.Â
The filter logic was also refined so users could click into an article and navigate back without losing their selected filter parameters, significantly enhancing the browsing experience.
The Results
By migrating to a managed infrastructure and resolving underlying technical conflicts, Global Peace Foundation achieved immediate and measurable improvements in both site performance and team efficiency.
- Performance Boost: The website’s desktop PageSpeed Index scores improved from 56 to 96, while mobile scores increased from 35 to 78.
- Technical Health: The site’s GTMetrix Grade improved from a D to an A, with overall performance jumping from 45% to 100%.
- Enhanced Stability: Malicious bot attacks were successfully neutralized. The site returned to a stable state, fully capable of handling legitimate seasonal traffic spikes without suffering recurring 504 timeouts.
- Streamlined Design Workflow: The upgraded Premium Staging environment eliminated the PHP thread bottleneck. The internal design team could finally use their Divi Visual Builder smoothly, completely eradicating the freezing and saving errors that previously delayed campaign launches.
“I really like Pronto Marketing's customer service because I can reach out whenever I need to, and their response is very prompt.
They have gone above and beyond to help with performance issues and normal day-to-day problems we face. It's also nice that whenever I reach out for help, it's always the same people, which gives a more intimate feel. They have also assisted us with a few of our web pages and provided solutions about what plugins we can use or whether they're okay for our website or not.”
A Shift to Proactive ImprovementÂ
With the backend stabilized and the web design workflow streamlined, Global Peace Foundation’s team was able to transition away from reactive WordPress troubleshooting. They can now focus their efforts entirely on proactively improving their website, launching new fundraising campaigns, and expanding their nonprofit’s global reach.
